Youth Academy Look to the Future and Beyond (19/08/2011)

The Ballymena United Youth Academy have been quietly going about their business in readiness for the season ahead. The senior clubs nursery will have 6 teams entered in various leagues this season from under 10's right through to the under 15's hoping to add to the successes of recent times. With the parent club setting out its stall, looking to promote from within there is real incentive for boys, seeing what can be achieved as more and more Academy products have become involved with the first team on a regular basis. The United babes will compete in the much renowned George Best Castlereagh League again this year, while the clubs older sides will travel every week to compete in the Lisburn Youth League against other Irish League Academy sides including Glentoran,Portadown and Crusaders.Chairman Mickey O'Brien and Chief Coach Stanley Galbraith have been working hard all summer along with their coaches to bring the best young talent in the Borough and beyond to play for the Sky Blue shirt and there have been some excellent acquisitions for every side. The under 10's under Colin Lorimer and Johnny Hume have excited many with their football, even at such an early stage, and the vast majority of this squad have come through the Showgrounds based Mini Soccer School for 6-10 year olds. The under 11's with manager Leo Heggarty at the helm will be hoping to impress with a number of new signings this season. The under 12's under new manager Alan Millar assisted by Phillip Galloway will hope to emulate last seasons silverware success and again have made some high quality signings. The under 13's and 14's will be hoping to push on with Andy Logan and Michael Watterson's sides hoping to improve on last years showings. The under 14's especially have amassed a strong squad, all the more impressive given the fact that at this age there are no less than four teams in the town competing to sign the best young talent!.The United under 15's under manager Mickey Toland have had a good pre season and are quietly confident of more than holding their own as they aim to impress before the parent club takes over the reins at under 16 and under 17 levels. Much to look forward to as the season approaches, first games on September 3rd.
